What Rankin County Humidity Does to an Unacclimated Floor
Mississippi swings hard between a wet spring and a dry, heated winter, and a hardwood floor feels every bit of it. Boards laid straight off the truck, before they have had time to settle into a room's real humidity, cup at the edges as they take on moisture from a damp slab, or pull apart into visible gaps once the furnace runs and the air dries out. Neither one is a defect in the wood. It is wood doing what wood does when nobody gave it time to adjust first.
We see it most in additions and older Flowood homes where a crawlspace or a new concrete pour is carrying more moisture than it looks like from the surface. A floor that was rushed in the fall can be cupping badly by February, and by the time an owner notices, the fix is a sand and refinish rather than a phone call. Catching it before the boards ever go down is the whole point of the next step.

Moisture Reads, Acclimation, and the Stagger Itself
Before we quote hardwood for a room, we read the moisture in the slab or subfloor, not just the air. That number tells us how long the material needs to sit and acclimate in the house, and whether the room needs anything extra underneath before a single board goes down. It is a slower start than some shops bother with, but it is the difference between a floor that lies flat for years and one we get a callback on.
The stagger is where the craft shows. Random-length boards are laid so no two end joints line up in adjacent rows, which is what keeps a hardwood floor reading as one continuous surface instead of a stack of bricks. When a house allows it, that same floor runs straight through a doorway with no threshold strip to break it, tight to the cabinet toe-kick on one side and into the next room on the other. That is exactly what our own installed floor at the Lakeland Drive showroom shows in the photo below: one run of hand-scraped plank carrying through a doorway with nothing to interrupt it. It is the look most owners ask for and the hardest one to get wrong-free without the acclimation done right first.

Living With a Hardwood Floor After the Crew Leaves
Felt pads under every chair and table leg are the cheapest insurance a hardwood floor gets, and the one thing owners skip most. Indoor humidity held in a normal range, roughly 30 to 50 percent, keeps the boards from cupping or gapping the same way an unacclimated install does on day one, so a cheap hygrometer and a humidifier in the driest months of winter do real work.
Clean with a damp mop, never a wet one, and skip anything that leaves standing water on the seams. If a floor starts showing wear in the traffic lanes, a sand and refinish brings it back without tearing it out. Call us before it gets to bare wood; a floor caught early refinishes cleaner and cheaper than one that has already worn through the finish coat.
